
Father Anthony "Tony" Appiah

Father Anthony “Tony” Appiah is a Ghanaian Catholic Priest working in the Arlington diocese.
He was born at Old Tafo, Kumasi, Ghana on Sunday, July 28 to Mr. Frank Obeng Sarfoh and Mary Ama Serwaah, both of blessed memory. He was the firstborn of six siblings and was baptized as an infant into the Catholic Faith. Father Tony’s primary school education was at Pankrono Roman Catholic School, with Secondary school and Sixth Form education at St. Hubert Minor Seminary from 1978 to 1985. His major seminary formation was at St. Peter’s Major Seminary in Cape Coast, Ghana, from 1986 to 1992.
In July 1992, Father Tony was ordained to the Archdiocese of Kumasi in Ghana. He worked as an associate priest for two years at Nyinahin parish. He was then appointed the Youth Chaplain and Vocations Director from 1994 to 1999 and during the same period as a pastor at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, Kwadaso before leaving for studies in Rome.
He had the opportunity to study for a Master’s degree in Youth Ministry and Catechetics at the Salesian University in Rome between 1999 and 2002.
From 2002 to 2012, he was again appointed as Youth Chaplain and Vocations Director and at the same time a pastor at St. Francis Xavier Parish at Asokore Mampong. Within this same period, he doubled as the Master of Ceremonies (MC) to the archbishop and also the priest-in-charge of the Liturgy Office.
In the United States of America, the bishop of Arlington diocese appointed Father Tony as the Spiritual Director for the Ghana Catholic Community in Arlington diocese from February 2012 to July 2023. He is currently appointed by the Bishop of Arlington diocese as head of the Catholic chaplaincy at Fairfax Hospital.
